Biography
Shakir Sabir Zabit
Shakir Sabir Zabit was an Iraqi Turkmen historian, folklorist, journalist, and translator whose poetry is also documented in an academic bibliography. He was born in Kirkuk in 1913. Because of his father's employment, he spent part of his childhood in Kifri before returning to Kirkuk for middle and secondary school. He graduated from the military college as a second lieutenant in 1938, served in the Iraqi Army's signals branch, commanded a wireless signals battalion, and retired in 1959. He then devoted himself to Iraqi and Turkmen history, Kirkuk folklore and press history, and translation. He belonged to Iraq's writers, historians, and translators organizations. In 1963 he was a founder and concession holder of the folklore journal Al-Turath al-Sha'bi; from 1966 he published the bilingual Arabic–Turkmen newspaper Iraq. The Union of Arab Historians awarded him its Arab Historian Medal in 1987. He endowed his library of about nine thousand volumes for the use of researchers. He died on the morning of 31 January 1990. Bibliographic authority records and a peer-reviewed biographical study support the dates 1913–1990 and Kirkuk as his birthplace, although weaker secondary sources give conflicting birth details.
