Abdullatif Imran Benderoglu was an Iraqi Turkmen poet, writer, journalist, translator, and folklorist. Born in Tuz Khurmatu in 1937, he completed his primary and middle education in Tuz Khurmatu and Kirkuk before entering the technical school operated by the Iraq Petroleum Company. His education was interrupted for political reasons, and he worked for a time as a technical draftsman. He left Iraq in 1964 and lived in Lebanon, Greece, and Bulgaria, returning during the latter half of the 1960s. After Turkmen cultural rights were recognized in 1970, he assumed cultural and media responsibilities and was associated for many years with the Turkmen Cultural Directorate and the Yurt newspaper as an editor and administrator. He contributed significantly to the modernization of Iraqi Turkmen poetry, the documentation of its language and folklore, and stronger literary relations with Azerbaijan. He received an honorary doctorate in Baku in 1992 and joined the Azerbaijan Writers' Union in 1994. He died in Amman on 2 February 2008.
